Flies respond to light in the range of ultraviolet (from about 350 nm) to red (to about 650 nm). Their preference of light vs. dark can be measured by their phototactic behaviour, while their light colour preference can be tested in choice experiments.

You might want to check your flies’ vision if you e.g. work with genes expressed in the visual system (optic lobe other parts of the CNS) or they are not attracted by light.
